This
one was based on a fictional feud with another USA Today blog, “On
Deadline”. The editor of O.D, posted a complimentary post about how Pop
Candy had loyal readers, and asked how come O.D.’s readers aren’t a
loyal or rabid? A few O.D. readers made a few negative comments about
Pop Candy, and a pretend feud broke out. It was all in good fun, but
inspired this strip about the big Dance Off between the blogs.
This
strip holds the distinction of being the first strip where I drew
nothing specific by hand. I added a few new characters, but specific to
the strip, all of the background was drawn digitally in Corel Draw, and
then I just positioned the characters within it.
It features a new
design for Apronk. In the first strip, I had drawn her as a walking
stick of butter, but while I liked the idea, the design was too
non-descript, and just looked like a block, not butter. It bothered me
since I first drew it, but I had no better design until this
week, when I got the idea to just spoof the Land O’ Lakes logo. I think
this is a lot better and funnier, if more cumbersome.
Of the new character designs here, I think Spookycat is my favorite, although it’s obvious. I also like aches and Paynes.
