The
response to part one of the Gremlin series was so strong, I knew
I had to continue it. I roughed out a story, at this point not much
more than a sentence for each “episode”, but I could see that it would
take 8 parts to tell the story.
This strip is the first one to
feature no Whitnesses at all, but that’s what happens when you’ve got a
plot line to stick to. But I figured I could get away with it, since
people were curious about what gremlins looked like. I knew they had to
be green, and big heads with spindly little bodies seemed creepy and
funny at the same time. I don’t think anyone’s mentioned this, but they
look a lot like the Great Gazoo from the Flintstones cartoon. This was
not intentional, but since I love the Great Gazoo, I was happy with the
accident. Once again, I took advantage of Ember being a great guy with
a great sense of humor, and made him a double agent. I knew at this
point that he’d end up being a hero, though. I could never make a
Whitness be a villain.
This entire strip was new drawings, so I was
up late a lot this week. I did get to reuse these gremlins drawings
later, so it all worked out. I used textures for the first time to
color the cave and was pretty happy with the results.
